A ” This Is Your Life Jazzy 60 Scrapbook Cake” that went along with the Jazzy 60 Featuring Theolonius Monk cake. Pics are printed with edible ink. Both cakes were delivered to Washington, DC.
This cake was for a Jazzy ’60 surprise birthday celebration for a very special lady. She loves jazz and her daughter wanted to reflect that and some pics of her life in cake. The record player is made with all cake with the exception of the mechanics that allow the turntable to rotate. THAT’S RIGHT, ROTATE. The cake flavors are Carrot and French Vanilla with almond buttercream frosting.
I was excited about creating this Work Of Art. My customer wanted a cake that would combine her daughter-In-Laws birthday and Graduation with a Master’s of Science degree in psychology. I decided to do a scrapbook.
I did a layout on my computer with Publisher and emailed it to my customer. She loved the idea, so away I went.
Once I got the OK, I thought, why not use a scrapbook program for the layout, it would be easier to do and I could see exactly where everything was going to be placed and what it would look like, once completed.
The scrapbook is an 8″x8″ 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 vanilla cake with plain and chocolate mocha buttercream and covered with fondant. The customer sent me all the photos and I was to choose which ones to use. This was so hard to do, so I ended up using all of them — couldn’t help myself.
The pictures were placed on the cake going from her childhood days, high school graduation, meeting my customer’s son, getting married, having their first child, purchasing a home, pics of family and friends and on to her Master’s Degree.
The color scheme was hot pink, light lime green and yellow. All of the elements on the page were printed exactly as I had it laid out in the software. I put gumpaste rings in the middle of the book and painted with edible gold food coloring to like an album. Since there were more pics than could fit in the book, I made an extra page from gumpaste and printed out the edible sheet and placed on the gumpaste page. There is a poem in the center entitled “My World Is Different” which fit appropriately with the heading — “Every Ending Is Just A Brand New Beginning“. This made it look as if a page had been taken out of the album to be worked on. The pics around the bottom and side of the board are printed out with edible paper and placed on gumpaste, as well, making it look as if these pics needed to be placed in the album.
I was very pleased with the completed project. The customer saw the cake and was overjoyed, she didn’t expect the cake to have that much attention to detail. Her exact words were: “I have goosebumps”.
It really is a blessing to know that your customers appreciate you and your work and that they are very much satisfied with the end product.
Again the picture is not the best.
Another birthday cake for my daughter. 10″ square — 4 layer carrot cake with cream cheese filling and frosting and covered with MMF. Top of jewelry box is molded chocolate and mirror is poured sugar. Rose is hand-molded from modeling chocolate. Plaque and jewelry pieces are fondant/gumpaste painted with edible silver. Roses on top of jewelry box are fondant.
My daughter’s birthday cake 2 years ago. Crate is carrot cake with cream cheese filling, buttercream frosting and covered with MMF. Airbrushed with edible paint. Wine bottle is vanilla cardamon flavored cake with buttercream filling and frosting, covered also in MMF. Large cheeses — carrot cake covered with MMF. Straw and grapes are buttercream.
Birthday cake for a young adult turning 18. She just wanted a simple cake with the words Supa Phat. Lemon cake with lemon buttercream filling and frosting. Supa Phat is molded from modeling chocolate studded with silver dragees.
Strawberry batter (made from scratch) birthday cake filled and frosted with cream cheese frosting. Beads are strung on wire and placed in a flower spike to protect the cake. Swirls and banner is fondant. Theme colors were purple and gold.
This cake was made for a young lady who turned a blessed 70 years old. Lemon pound with lemon buttercream. Roses and leaves are fondant. I was told that Mom loved the cake. As sometimes lemon can be a little overpowering, I was afraid that this would be the case. I guess I was being too skeptical, because the recipient said it was perfect. How wonderful!
This was another cake made this weekend. This is a marble cake on the bottom tier and on the top tier a pound cake. The top tier is supported by four champagne flutes. A hole is cut in the center to allow for a glass bowl to sit and hold the champagne bottle. Needless to say, the top tier was very heavy. I was afraid that it would crush the flutes, but they held the weight. Whew! The cake is filled and frosted with buttercream. The stripes are made from fondant and stippled with edible glitter. The bubbles are made from gelatin. This was the first time making bubbles from gelatin. A few steps I failed to do on the last ones I made and had to throw away, but luckily I had enough to use. Will definitely use this method again.
